Studying in the UK can be quite the investment, therefore students may also be pleasantly surprised to find the broad range of funding options available. Deadlines for these schemes are fast approaching, which means that students will need to start applying as soon as possible!  Below are some examples of country specific, and alternative funding sources for postgraduate students.


General International Scholarships

Chevening Scholarships

The Chevening Scholarship is funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), and partner organisations. Recipients are personally selected by British Embassies and High Commissions throughout the world.


• University tuition fee

• Annual stipend (sufficient for a single person)

• Some other expenses

Commonwealth Scholarship/Shared Scholarships

Commonwealth Scholarships are available for citizens of developing Commonwealth countries, who wish to pursue Master’s and PhD studies in the UK. These scholarships are funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID), and aim to contribute to the UK’s international development goals, overseas interest and high quality education.


• University Composition Fee

• Annual stipend (sufficient for a single person)

• One return economy airfare

Deadline: All applications must be submitted by 23.59 (GMT) on 15 November 2016 at the latest.

Saïd Foundation Scholarships 2017/18

Applications for the Saïd Foundation Scholarship are restricted to candidates who are Syrian, Palestinian (including Palestinians inside Israel), Lebanese and Jordanian.


• Scholarships are primarily offered for one year postgraduate courses. In exceptional circumstances it may be possible to consider applicants for two year courses.

Deadline: All applications must be submitted by 23:59 UK time on 1 November 2016.

Santander Universities scholarships

Santander partner with UK universities and offer Master degree scholarships for students from their network countries. Click here for more information about applications and deadlines.


Country-specific scholarships


• The Yayasan Khazanah foundation, established by the Khazanah Nasional Berhad (Khazanah Nasional), investment holding arm of the Government of Malaysia, has a variety of scholarship programmes to develop leaders amongst citizens the of Asian countries. Click here for more information.

• DayaDiri Cambridge Scholarship – Scholarship is available to Malaysian applicants for the University of Cambridge at either undergraduate or postgraduate level. Click here for more information.


Canadian Centennial Scholarship Fund


• The Canadian Centennial Scholarship Fund (CCSF) provides awards ranging from £2,000 to £5,000 to Canadian men and women for academic and artistic postgraduate study in the UK.

Deadline: If you are considering applying for a CCSF award for the 2017-2018 academic year, details will be posted in November 2016, with a deadline in early March 2017.

Marshall Scholarship (Deadline for 2016 entry has now passed, look out for 2017 dates)

Up to forty American Scholars are selected each year to study at graduate level in the UK. Competition for the award is made on an annual basis.

Value: £23,000-£30,000 per year

The Marshall Scholarship may cover:

• University fees

• Living allowance

• One round trip ticket to the UK

• Support of a dependent spouse

• Annual book grant

• Annual thesis grant

• Research and daily travel grant

Fulbright Commission (UK-US) (Deadline has passed, look for information on 2017 entry)

The US Fulbright Awards Programme offers a wide range of study abroad opportunities to US citizens annually. See below for the relevant categories.

• Postgraduate Student Awards for prospective Masters students who wish to study in the UK.

• Scholar Awards for academics and professionals who wish to lecture, study and/or conduct research in the UK. These awards are offered at a wide range of partner universities. Scholars may also apply in the All-disciplines category. Awards are also offered for senior academics and professionals.

Great Britain China Educational Trust – The Trust supports Chinese Students studying in Britain via the Chinese Student Awards. Website yet to be updated, look out for the upcoming deadlines.


• Awards granted up to £3,000. Most commonly awarded between £1,500-£2,000.

1) Loughborough University –

School of Economics and Business Scholarships

• 25%-50% of the programme fee which will be credited to the student’s tuition fee account

• Awards of £3,000 to £18,250 are available to international students across all subject areas.

• Each scholarship will have a value of £3,000 and will be tenable for one academic year. The scholarship will be deducted from the tuition fees.
